THE VENUE - SANYA, CHINA

Sanya is located on the most southern tip of Hainan Island in the South China Sea. It has been transformed from a home to China's most reviled exiles, that no one wanted to visit, to one of China's most popular and beautiful areas. It has some of the most spectacular and well maintained stretches of beaches in Southern Asia.

It is an important political and foreign trade port as well as being a famous coastal tourist city filled with tropical landscapes and local customs. Since Sanya is situated in the southernmost part of China, she has been called "the remotest cape of the earth" since ancient time. The region of Sanya has a long history of human development. There were discoveries of cultural relics of the Old Stone Age and Ancient Persian tombs have also been found along the coast.

Sanya has changed names many times during it's colourful history. It was called Zhuya during the Han Dynasty, Zhenzhou during the Tang Dynasty and Yazhou in the Ming Dynasty. After the Qing Dynasty, its name was Yaxian County. Then finally in 1954, its capital moved from Yacheng Town to its current location, and in 1984, Sanya got its present name and was upgraded to a city.
